Sonic the Comic #40

9 December 1994

Issue overview

The Freedom Fighters reach a Pleasant Zone turned into a frozen wasteland. Its trapped residents and a robot armed with an ice weapon give Sonic's group a rescue mission with a strikingly different setting.

Original stories

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog · The Frozen Zone #

Sonic, Tails, Porker and Johnny find the Pleasant Zone iced over and its folk frozen solid; a Chill-bot rises through the crust and statues Johnny before Sonic wrecks it. Below, the ranting Chiller boasts that locals who snubbed his weather schemes got the cold shoulder back via a zone-wide Chill-machine. Sonic vibrates free, melts the ice by reversing the machine, and talks the would-be villain into mopping up for the Zone instead of rotting in a cell.

Script: Lew Stringer · Art: Casanovas, John M. Burns · Letters: Ellie de Ville

    Reprinted in issue 155.

  2. Eternal Champions · Larson's Revenge, Part 4 #

Bound in Tagliani's car and rolled toward Shadow's base with a boot-load of dynamite, Larcen nearly accepts dying twice—until Shadow goads him to saw their ropes on her razor fan. They leap clear as the blast levels the building and the papers she needed; Tagliani's double-cross has cost her the case. Larcen then admits he lifted the documents himself earlier—even a ninja missed Chicago's best cat burglar—and the Eternal Champions head back to the future with organised crime on the ropes.

Script: Michael Cook · Art: Jon Haward · Letters: Tom Frame

  3. Knuckles · Carnival Night Conspiracy, Part 2 #

Grouchio softens the earlier gunfire as a misunderstanding and offers Knuckles a cut of Carnival Night profits to spruce up the Island for his lost people. Sceptical Knuckles still tours, pulverises two Troopers he assumes prove Robotnik's hand, and is told the brothers merely bought Badniks off the doctor. A rollercoaster-haunted-house ride delights him—while Grouchio and Chicio quietly plan an "accident", lest he learn they really do work for Robotnik.

Script: Nigel Kitching · Art: Richard Elson · Letters: Elitta Fell

    Reprinted in issue 173.

  4. Decap Attack · The Replacement #

Chuck, Head and Igor barge into the lab to find the Professor's latest monster—huge, muscle-bound, and wearing its head upside down until a Really Big Spanner rights it. Deciding one castle monster is enough, the brute overpowers Chuck, then balks when told lifelong castle chores await the survivor and vaults the battlements himself. Months on, Chuck spots a familiar face starring on Gladiators; the Professor refuses to believe his eyes.

Script: Nigel Kitching · Art: Nigel Kitching · Letters: Steve Potter
