Story arcs

A path through the major stories of the original UK comic, from Sonic’s earliest battles to the final original issue.

Reading guide 01

Sonic's origin and Robotnik's Mobius

The first issue begins with Sonic already fighting Robotnik's Badniks. Issue 7 introduces the unpredictable Super Sonic, while issue 8 turns back to the experiments of Doctor Ovi Kintobor: the accident that makes Sonic blue also changes Kintobor into Robotnik. Sonic's return from the Special Zone in issue 9 reveals how far the dictator has tightened his grip on Emerald Hill. Issue 10 sends residents to forced labour in Robotnik's Chemical Plant. Together these stories establish a world with a past, an occupying regime and a hero whose greatest power carries its own danger.

Reading guide 02

Ecco and the Vortex

The first Ecco the Dolphin serial begins when a strange force removes the life from Earth's seas, leaving Ecco to search for the other dolphins. His route through time and the oceans reveals the Vortex, an alien species using Earth as a food source. The six-part Return of Ecco the Dolphin resumes the conflict much later in the comic: the Asterite, a mysterious underwater ally, helps him reach the Vortex's world and rescue those taken. These two separated serials make Ecco one of the clearest examples of a Sega game adaptation continuing its own story across the numbered run.

Tails and the Nameless Zone

Tails's first solo strip sends him back to the Nameless Zone, his home beyond Mobius. His letters have led its Enchanter Kings to believe that he, rather than Sonic, is the great hero of their adventures. A reluctant Tails nevertheless stops Trogg on the Dimension Bridge. The Land Beyond and The Morbidden Hunt return him to a world of magic, foxes and goblins, while The Revenge of Trogg later brings Knuckles into the conflict. Across these visits, the joke about Tails's exaggerated reputation gives way to a character who repeatedly has to earn it.

Captain Plunder's own adventures

Captain Plunder first turns up as a sky pirate in a Sonic adventure, pursuing treasure without sharing Robotnik's cause. His own four-part strip begins with a raid on Robotnik's airship that leaves Plunder captured and facing execution. Shanghaied gives the pirate another three-part outing, and the six-part Spice Maidens story places him beside Queen Zorabel's unruly daughters in a new treasure hunt. Together the appearances show how a supporting adversary could sustain adventures with his own crew, comic mishaps and changing fortunes away from Sonic's lead strip.

Reading guide 05

The Sonic Terminator

Robotnik's answer to Sonic is Metallix, a robot designed to match his speed and survive a direct fight. The five-part story also involves Captain Plunder's theft of the Chaos Emeralds and Amy's capture. The chase moves from Emerald Hill to Never Lake and the Miracle Planet, whose strange relationship with time becomes central to the final confrontation. It is one of the first Sonic stories in the comic to give a single threat room to develop over several consecutive issues.

Reading guide 06

Knuckles and the Floating Island

The crash of Robotnik's second Death Egg brings Sonic to the Floating Island and into conflict with its guardian, Knuckles. Their first encounters are shaped by Robotnik's manipulation and his pursuit of the Chaos Emeralds. The sequence moves from Enter Knuckles through Power of the Chaos Emeralds and Robotnik's Revenge, giving the island a continuing place in the comic instead of treating it as a single game setting. Knuckles becomes both an opponent and a potential ally as the threat to his home becomes clearer.

Reading guide 07

The Death Egg and the Master Emerald

Robotnik launches the Death Egg II and needs the Master Emerald to power it. The stories through issues 45 to 53 move between the Floating Island, Sky Sanctuary and the station itself. Metallix returns to seize the Emerald, and Sonic's use of its energy introduces Super Sonic into an already dangerous battle. The linked Count Down to Disaster and Disaster! chapters turn the Floating Island setting into a sustained struggle over Robotnik's largest weapon.

Reading guide 08

Shortfuse the Cybernik

Shorty the Squirrel tries to interfere with Robotnik's Badnik machinery and becomes trapped inside the prototype Cybernik armour. Its programming fails to erase his will, leaving Robotnik with a powerful new opponent rather than a loyal weapon. Enter the Cybernik tells that origin in three parts; a later encounter with Knuckles and the five-part Cybernik Strikes Back take the character beyond his first fight. His metal body lets him challenge Robotnik's machines, but it also turns survival into a problem of identity and freedom.

Reading guide 09

The Brotherhood of Metallix

The Brotherhood is more than another Robotnik creation sent to beat Sonic. Its plans reach the Miracle Planet, draw in the Chaotix Crew and eventually threaten Mobius's history itself. The first four-part confrontation begins in Metropolis; The Return of Chaotix revisits the danger after the planet returns. That later six-part story brings Sonic, Porker and their allies into a time-travel struggle where undoing the Brotherhood's victory means confronting the origin of Robotnik.

Reading guide 10

Commander Brutus

Robotnik gives an advanced Trooper a copy of his own brain patterns, creating Commander Brutus. The result is a lieutenant with Robotnik's strategic mind and his appetite for power, but no reason to remain obedient. Across four issues Brutus captures Sonic's friends and challenges both the Freedom Fighters and his creator. Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic raises the stakes of the final encounter without making the new robot a simple one-fight villain.

Reading guide 11

Super Sonic and the Black Asteroid

Running Wild shows Super Sonic turning on the people Sonic means to protect. His separation from Sonic then shifts the danger into the Special Zone, where Chaotix and the Omni-Viewer become part of the effort to contain him. The Black Asteroid and Lord Sidewinder's schemes build towards Doomsday and the hundredth issue. The Final Victory resolves Robotnik's dictatorship, but its use of the asteroid means that victory and Super Sonic's release are tightly connected.

Reading guide 12

The Final Victory and what follows

Issue 100 uses a single connected narrative that brings several characters together and ends Robotnik's long rule of Mobius. The following issues have a different kind of work to do: Mobius holds an election, displaced residents return home, and Sonic's allies find new roles in a less tightly controlled world. The shift allows shorter adventures and character stories to share space with the consequences of the larger victory.

Reading guide 13

The Evil Empire

Robotnik returns to Emerald Hill with a connection to the Drakon Empire. Sonic's pursuit takes him to the empire's homeworld, where a trial by combat and a Knuckles Metallix put him under a very different sort of pressure. The four-part story restores Robotnik as a major threat while opening a wider conflict with the Drakons. It later became the complete reprinted story in the comic's final numbered issue.

Reading guide 14

Amy and Tekno travel together

Amy Rose and Tekno the Canary become a regular pairing after Amy's solo stories and their shared Star Struck adventure. Spaced Out takes them away from Mobius to find Shortfuse amid an alien conflict. Earthbound follows their attempt to get home, after which the pair headline a succession of shorter stories before Breakout returns to Shortfuse's struggle with his armour. Their run gives the comic a partnership built around Amy's initiative and Tekno's inventions, with room for adventures beyond Sonic's fight against Robotnik.

Reading guide 15

Drakons and the power of the Emeralds

The Drakon leaders seek the Chaos Emeralds, and Grimer's plans on the Floating Island help bring their ambitions within reach. Robotnik then seizes the Emeralds' energy and becomes powerful enough to alter reality around Sonic. Order & Chaos, Robotnik Reigns Supreme and Showdown form a sequence about control of the comic's most important source of power, with the struggle extending beyond the island and across Mobius itself.

Reading guide 16

Sonic on Shanazar

The Shanazar run puts Sonic in an unfamiliar world of imperial guards, magic and uneasy alliances. A man apparently restored to Doctor Kintobor's kindly identity complicates Sonic's view of Robotnik. The journey then ranges from the Mystic Mountain and a desert crossing to a tower, an escape and a town shaken by an earthquake. These issues give the lead strip a connected setting whose problems cannot all be solved by speed.

Reading guide 17

Chaos and the last original issue

The comic's final original-story cycle begins when Chaos appears in Metropolis. Sonic's contact with the creature changes his eyes, while Tikal's intervention sends him into the ancient history of the echidnas and Drakons. Robotnik, Chaos and Super Sonic converge as the story approaches Perfect Chaos! and Point of No Return! Issue 184 closes the run of new strips by bringing Sonic and his dangerous alter ego back together, leaving the comic to continue with reprints.
