Commander Brutus

Robotnik gives an advanced Trooper a copy of his own brain patterns, creating Commander Brutus. The result is a lieutenant with Robotnik's strategic mind and his appetite for power, but no reason to remain obedient. Across four issues Brutus captures Sonic's friends and challenges both the Freedom Fighters and his creator. Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic raises the stakes of the final encounter without making the new robot a simple one-fight villain.

    Sonic the Comic #63

Grimer finishes Project Brutus by scanning Robotnik's brain patterns into a towering Ultimate Trooper, whom Robotnik names his second-in-command. When a spy spots Sonic's circus disguise in the Pleasant Zone, Commander Brutus intercepts the report and arrives with a Troop ship rather than informing his creator. Brutus shrugs off Sonic's assault as if it were nothing and, declaring himself unbeatable, orders his Troopers to open fire.

    Issue 064 · 10 November 1995

    Sonic the Comic #64

Sonic's speed pulls Amy and Johnny clear of Brutus's opening volley in the Pleasant Zone; they quickly realise the Commander thinks and speaks like Robotnik himself. Brutus tracks their heat trail while, at the Citadel, Robotnik fumes that his new lieutenant left without orders. After Brutus shrugs off a collapsing building, a Trooper seizes Amy and Sonic surrenders; a piercing summons forces Brutus to report that he has done what Robotnik never could and captured the outlaws for execution, only for Robotnik to demand they be kept alive.

  3. Cover of Sonic the Comic issue 65

    Issue 065 · 24 November 1995

    Sonic the Comic #65

Sonic, Amy and Johnny are chained together and paraded through the Pleasant Zone by Commander Brutus, while Robotnik furiously orders them brought to the Citadel at once. Brutus strikes a Trooper that urges obedience; Amy snatches the dropped gun and blasts him, and the shackled trio flee across a bridge the Troopers wreck behind them. Brutus's old SBS anti-gravity unit carries him over the gorge, and when he ignores Robotnik to finish them off, Sonic's spines flare and he becomes Super Sonic, snaps the chains and charges.

  4. Cover of Sonic the Comic issue 66

    Issue 066 · 8 December 1995

    Sonic the Comic #66

Super Sonic smashes into Brutus hard enough to crack his supposedly indestructible armour; when Brutus grabs Amy as a shield, Super ignores the hostage and tears the Commander's arm off at the elbow. Troopers and the Troop ship's Doom-Foam cannon fail to stop the chase, and Brutus flees to Metropolis while Sonic reverts with no memory of the fight. At the Citadel, Robotnik berates him for disobedience, but Brutus, sharing his creator's ambition, quietly schemes to rule Mobius himself one day.
