The Death Egg and the Master Emerald

Robotnik launches the Death Egg II and needs the Master Emerald to power it. The stories through issues 45 to 53 move between the Floating Island, Sky Sanctuary and the station itself. Metallix returns to seize the Emerald, and Sonic's use of its energy introduces Super Sonic into an already dangerous battle. The linked Count Down to Disaster and Disaster! chapters turn the Floating Island setting into a sustained struggle over Robotnik's largest weapon.

While the heroes regroup, the pirates slip inside, yank a chain for lights, and loot the tomb — then the ancient lamps fail and Hyudoro ghosts chase them out empty-handed. Knuckles breaks a seal so sand buries pyramid and treasure alike, opens a secret exit for himself and Sonic, and Plunder later spins the crew a wildly inflated ghost story.

Three days later Sonic trades the Emerald to Knuckles for sanctuary: Emerald Hill Folk sail to Mushroom Hill while Robotnik still vows their ruin.
