Captain Plunder's own adventures

Captain Plunder first turns up as a sky pirate in a Sonic adventure, pursuing treasure without sharing Robotnik's cause. His own four-part strip begins with a raid on Robotnik's airship that leaves Plunder captured and facing execution. Shanghaied gives the pirate another three-part outing, and the six-part Spice Maidens story places him beside Queen Zorabel's unruly daughters in a new treasure hunt. Together the appearances show how a supporting adversary could sustain adventures with his own crew, comic mishaps and changing fortunes away from Sonic's lead strip.

Sentenced to hang until he is sorry — preferably dead — he is chained at Highview Corrective Centre, where frog warder Mister Gullets drenches him with something that is definitely not water. Cellmate Simpson the Cat moans that he knows a secret exit he cannot reach; luckily Plunder's hook hides a mechanical chain-cutter.

Filch and the Sky Pirates, half-unsure which captain they are rescuing, storm Highview after reading the Mobian Times and flatten the Trooper guards. Inside, Plunder and Simpson are already free of their chains; Simpson plucks a floating question mark from the air to pick the lock, then paints a black hole that swallows Mister Gullets. They enter Billy Gulch's twenty-year escape tunnel while Plunder insists they will claim they fought dozens of guards.

Back in Mystic Cave Zone, Plunder decides a new crew beats sharing treasure with the old one.

With a Star Post lashed to the wheel, Plunder's sky-ship means to raid every dimension from New Tek's docks - yet the press gang bags only one smart green stranger. Next morning Simpson finds the captive has scoffed all the Old Caribbean chocolate, so Plunder marches him to the plank. Hands bound, Proctor Speckle fumbles his Transforming Serum; from the shark-filled water rises Mister Fry, a shark still clamped in his jaws.

Fry batters Plunder's crew flat, then tenderises a hauled-up shark for the grill and erupts if anyone calls him Speckle. Simpson steers him to the galley; crispy steaks calm the Captain, who apologises for the plank until Fry shrugs that it was Speckle who walked it. Leftover Transforming Serum, Filch discovers, went down shark throats - and the enlarged pack now rings the hull.

The sharks are subdued, but Speckle slips away with the crew's vintage rum truffles.

Zorabel finally produces her map, which points not to the Akotek Treasure but to Krakiota the sea serpent at Skull Rock, who knows every secret on Mobius. The dread beast proves tiny enough to sit on Plunder's palm and will answer only three questions. Plunder wastes two; Zorabel asks whether he knows where the treasure is hidden, and he answers yes — then stops. Facing Simpson's cooking pot, Krakiota starts thinking about bending the rules.

Zorabel tows him in a rowboat for the ship's luck; he feels safe at last — until a vast white shark rises behind him.
