Sonic the Comic #73

15 March 1996

Issue overview

Tails is tired of watching Sonic receive all the fan mail. His attempt to prove himself by cleaning up Casino Night leads to a Robotnik trap, making Spinball Wizard as much a Tails story as a Sonic rescue.

Original stories

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog · Spinball Wizard #

Tails sulks when Sonic's fan-mail buries the circus wagon and nothing arrives for him, so he marches on Casino Night Zone to prove himself - and Troopers dump him straight into Robotnik's Spinball Murder Machine. Sonic races in with Power Sneakers, only to tumble into the flippers himself until he can barely stand. Tied beside him, Tails slips free, rides the giant metal spinball into the generator and blows the machine apart; back home a letter finally comes for the fox - an overdue library fine.

Script: Mark Millar · Art: Keith Page · Letters: Ellie de Ville

    Reprinted in issue 198.

  2. Knuckles · New Master Emerald #

Knuckles finishes carving a replacement Master Emerald and begins draining the Guardian robot's head into it, only for the head to wake and fire beams that force him into cover. He burrows through the Chamber walls, drops onto the robot and knocks its aim aside until its power falls too low to shoot. Seeing a conscious being about to die, he tears out the transfer cables, then learns Zachary's reprogramming has faded - leaving memory banks that might finally tell him where his people went.

Script: Nigel Kitching · Art: Nigel Dobbyn · Letters: Elitta Fell

    Reprinted in issue 193.

  3. Shining Force · The Curse of Zeon, Part 1 #

On peaceful Granseal Island, cocky Bowie spars with elf Taya and ends flat on his face before her healing magic. A metal bird lands in the street and robot Zynk climbs out, desperate to warn Maximillian that Zeon is stirring again. East in Ribble, diggers force open a sealed door whose English warning they cannot read, and stumble onto a cache of guns, bombs, missiles and tanks.

Script: Nigel Kitching · Art: Martin Griffiths · Colour: Gina Hart · Letters: Tom Frame

  4. Tails! · Fox on the Run, Part 1 #

On an afternoon stroll through Spring Flower Zone, Tails swats three Buzzers and frees the animals inside; two leave, but lost mouse Tristram - everyone calls him Tantrum - needs escorting home to Metropolis Zone. Bounty hunter Fleabyte corners them for a Robotnik reward, his revolver jams, and he switches to a laser blaster. Tails stalls while Tantrum runs, then dives after the mouse when he tumbles into a deep pot-hole.

Script: Lew Stringer · Art: Carl Flint · Colour: Mike Hadley · Letters: Steve Potter

    Reprinted in issue 175.
