Sonic the Comic #96

4 February 1997

Issue overview

Sonic interrupts a bank robbery in New Tek City's Mootant Village, but the locals already have heroes of their own: the Zed Monkeys. Hero Hour plays Sonic's direct approach against a very different style of crime fighting.

Original stories

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog · Hero Hour #

A bank robbery in Mootant Village puts Sonic at odds with the Zed Monkeys, whose scheduled Hero Hour leaves the Yob free to escape. Sonic catches the hippopotamus himself, then confronts Professor Zed at the monkeys' school. The supposed mentor is unmasked as Madmeano, who has been manipulating the routine so his gang can steal undisturbed; the Monkeys replace Hero Hour with a more miserable daily ritual.

  2. Knuckles · Roots, Part 3 #

With the Elder Tree gone, the Ancient Trees raise a vast forest across Metropolis Zone and Omen's forces ambush Knuckles, Ebony and Pyjamas. The Trees threaten to wipe flesh creatures from Mobius, but Knuckles's regret over the destruction persuades them that revenge is not the answer. Omen and the cyborg gorillas are expelled, while new shoots promise that the Elder Tree may return.

  3. Tails · Furtual Reality #

Tails follows an invitation to meet his fans at Casino Night Zone, only to find them wearing visors and firing at him as though he were a Badnik. Max Gamble's virtual-reality stunt makes the real danger too easy to dismiss, so Tails hauls the organiser down from his tower and turns the crowd against him. When the batteries die, Tails gets an autograph request?only for Sonic, naturally.

  4. Sonic's World · Mock the Doc #

Robotnik's compulsory evening broadcast is hijacked by Mock the Doc, a pirate game show where ordinary viewers dress up as the dictator and ridicule him. Grimer sends Troopers to silence the studio, but the fake Robotniks issue conflicting orders and the machines destroy one another on air. Robotnik arrives too late, finding the crew gone and the cameras still running to capture his humiliation.

Script: Lew Stringer · Art: Nigel Dobbyn · Letters: Annie Parkhouse

    Reprinted in issue 195.
