Sonic the Comic #161

28 July–10 August 1999

Issue overview

Sonic and Amy arrive in an advanced Shanazar Zone expecting anonymity, but the inhabitants have already watched their exploits through tiny cameras. Instead, the pair are drawn into a dangerous space race.

Original stories

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog · Space Race, Part 1 #

While touring Shanazar, Sonic and Amy are pressed into a zero-gravity race by Skorrg, who holds Amy aboard his ship while Sonic competes against the alien Turbo. Turbo reveals that losing would cost his family their lives, and Sonic struggles in the unfamiliar conditions as his rival pulls ahead. Amy takes over the ship after disabling Skorrg's pilot, but Sonic's defeat leaves both vessels facing destruction by the opposing racers.

Script: Lew Stringer · Art: Richard Elson · Letters: Elitta Fell

Reprinted stories

  1. Tails · Zonerunner & The Flock, Part 3 #

Tails and the Flock race the Chemical Plant sewers to stop Nutzan Bolt flooding neighbouring Zones with Mega Mack. Sab shows him the microputer door trick, downs a bomb-flinging Spiny, and the flock commandeers a Floater—which Tails nearly wrecks before stabbing the reset button by accident. At the zone barrier, Nutzan orders Tess and the droids onto the sheep and keeps the "interfering fox" for himself.

    First appeared in issue 37.

  2. Sonic's World · Face from the Past, Part 2 #

Amy scolds Sonic over 'Tonic' until he names the shapeshifter Metamorphia, caught mid-hammer blow at Tails when Sonic arrives. She cycles through monster, dinosaur and sticky goo before his speed leaves her reeling over a waterfall; back on Death Egg II she still adores Robotnik, who sneers 'monster' and fumes at her third failure.

    First appeared in issue 52.

  3. Sonic the Hedgehog · The Hive, Part 2 #

Vesper punches into the throne room; Sonic laps the chamber, strips every sting-weapon and spins the bully dizzy, then calmly offers surrender while he invents a plan. At the gate he races a tunnel into a hurricane that hurls the wasp host into the Special Zone; the bees seal the breach behind them. Tradition lets a Hive-saver name any favour - Sonic quietly frees Charmy, then swears the prince to secrecy lest Chaotix murder him for the kindness.

    First appeared in issue 92.
